Porsche 356 Roof Rack
Hello everyone,
I’m in the preliminary stages of manufacturing a period correct roof rack. I had someone ask me to build one, so I figured I might as well build a few. Let me know if anyone else might have interest. You can post here or email me directly at: trevorcgates@gmail.com

Re: Porsche 356 Roof Rack
Trevor......what`s a "period correct" roofrack for a 356? Were there any available back in the day? I`ve had this "Pedro" rack hangin in the shop for a decade, will yours be similar?........Thanks...bb

Re: Porsche 356 Roof Rack
Hi Bill,
To my knowledge... Porsche did not offer a factory option for a roof rack on a 356. Nothing on Charlie White’s (RIP) website, factory documentation/accessories catalog, nor anyone I’ve talked with can recall a Porsche roof rack.
What I consider to be “period correct” would be a rack that looks German and more form follows function, as opposed to a VW rack that’s been adapted for a 356. I have access to a period correct roof rack that was bought new by Jack McAfee, fits a 356 and it has the right look to me.
My thought process is, it’d be cool to have such a roof rack for going on weekends getaways with the wife (or husband), taking a mountain bike somewhere, putting a spare tire on the rack for the period correct look at a car meet/show, etc.
I’ll post an update when I get closer.

Re: Porsche 356 Roof Rack
So is the rack going to be more like the early 911 Leitz roofrack, no wood? If you look close at my pic, you can see an AMCO rack that I occasionally use on my 912......it`s noisy, kind of a "whistle" sound.

Re: Porsche 356 Roof Rack
I can certainly see the functionality of a roof rack. I'm surprised Porsche or Amco didn't have one for the 356.

I never saw a roof rack for a 356 offered by Porsche. 911, yes.

I love the Emory design. That one is in titanium.

Re: Porsche 356 Roof Rack
Hi Trevor - are you still putting together roof racks? If not do you know where I can find one to fit a 356c? I haven't found a post that directs to a specific website and Googles came up at a loss!

Re: Porsche 356 Roof Rack
Yes I still plan to do a run of them, but I’ve been super busy doing metal work on customer 356’s.
I’ll try to move it up on the priority list.

Definitely interested in one of these when you get around to them. Need something to strap a surfboard to...soft racks are getting old to put on and off!

Re: Porsche 356 Roof Rack
That rack would work great. Add a couple of Da Kine pads and straps and it's much easier than the soft racks. I used them on my '58 back in the day and had to remember to put a twist in the straps otherwise the wind would vibrate them sounding like a jet taking off!
