356A Interior Paint Question

#1 Post by David Twiss »

Greeting Registry Members

I am at the final stages of restoring my Aussie delivered RHD 1959 T2 356A Coupe (VIN 107501).
The car was delivered 5706 Silver metallic with Green leatherette interior.
My question is what is the colour code for the green interior metal door caps and rear upholstery capping’s?
Unfortunately, the paint on these components was removed early on the restoration process in error.

Many Thanks
David

You are probably on your own to find something close to the upholstery color. If they still have them I’d look at interior color paints for early 70s cars, I think greens were popular then. They have (or had) color books by year and manufacturer that could help and should be able to mix it in gloss finish.
I am thinking American cars, but probably that was a worldwide color trend.
Also I think 1950s VW exterior colors may have something good.

Silver w/ green is a great combination.
Typically the door caps match the color of the dash.
ERLKONIG CLASSIC offers build sheets for our cars, it has the codes for the paint as well as the interior.
However the numbers may not help much, materials and paint have changed a lot in 50 years.

So the door caps and dash would both be the exterior body color? If so my suggestion will be of little use.

Ambiguity creeps in. There's the dash and there's the dash cover.

I mis-spoke, I am thinking like a Pre-A guy.
Brian made me re-think my response, the A cars did have a dash cover and most pictures I looked at today,
the door caps were the color of the dash cap.
My apologies, I still recommend the ERLKONIG CLASSIK build sheet for the colors

So David may yet be using a 1973 Pontiac color, or from a Holden or something.

This is the color on my friends 59 A sunroof coupe door tops. This car was restored to original . Silver body and Green interior . The Green door tops were matched to the originals with this Dupont Centari Acrylic Enamel. No clear was used over the paint.

DuPont auto paint is long gone, and Centari acrylic enamel is even longer gone. Xalta is the new brand for what was DuPont, but I doubt if that formula can be crossed over to a current paint line.
Just looked again, maybe that GS471 is still a good color number.
