Keep in mind that the photo in question depicts a corduroy insert option, which typically have a deeper "pleat" than the normal vinyl. After trips on today's airlines, a thought occurred to me about the "bulb" on the back of the seat. Maybe they were ahead of their time and made the lower part of the backrest thinner than the top to make more legroom for back seat passengers.
