What fan housing shroud do I have

#1 Post by Joost van der Velden »

I am trying to figure out what fan housing I have. Please see pictures. The rectangular depressed area on the top is not there. It has the welded arms for the carb linkages.

Is this a 356 housing and from what year approx?

Thanks all..

I believe it is an A model but the wire mesh screen on the rear has been cut off.

1958-59 Super. If the silver paint that is exposed is original.

The rectangular depressed area in the top front which your shroud doesn't have, was added by VW to clear a larger oil cleaner. The lack of that indent helps to date your shroud. I'm not sure when that happened, but Vic's post above suggests 1960. 1960 would correspond to the change from the 36HP VW to the 40 HP engine. Porsche shrouds started out as VW chrouds. That depressed area servs no purpose in a 356.

The 57 VW parts book shows the early style shroud without the indentation as part no. 111-119-025.

The 60 VW parts book shows the later style shroud with the indentation as part no. 113-119-025.

The first three digits of the part number indicate type and model. Someone more familiar with VW type and model designations will be able to pinpoint when the change occurred. My guess from the Samba list of chassis numbers is June of '59, ~two-months prior to the '60 model rollout in August.

VW went to 40hp on the 1961 models. 1960 was the last year for 36hp.

The 40hp, Type 2-only (bus) engine, installed between May 1959 and May 1960, also had the rectangular indentation in the fan shroud, which explains why these shrouds are found prior to the start of the 1960 model year.

I have a very late 1959 engine that does not have the indentation and I believe the shroud is original.

My July '60 engine also does not have the indentation, but I suspect the shroud was swapped sometime before the early 1970s.
