Glove box buffer types

#1 Post by E Rutherford »

Was working on a 64 C Coupe (Red of course) and noticed that the glove box buffers were missing. Went and got some from stock for a C car and looked at them, no way those are going fit in those little holes! I have access to two other C cars close by. One is a Karmann, the other is a Ruetter, both 64 production cars, both had the large buffers. So that ruled out the coach builder differences. The holes in my Red C are 5mm so I installed the early small barrels. The larger buffers, the hole is 8mm. I am more curious about why or what caused the change.

Maybe the very early '64's had the smaller opening? The C manual shows the larger buffers.

It is interesting that so late in 356 production the glove box locking was changed. Lock moved to the side and the locking mechanism changed. This also meant the glove box door liner was changed, along with the cutouts in the actual glove box (cutout for the lock tab). Something motivated this and perhaps the change of the buffer. Improvement? Cost reduction?

Any chance the 64 needing the old style was early production with flat closing panel and others were later? WAG of course.

That's along the lines of my thinking, too, Doug. Early '64's with carry-over from the 356; mechanical tach, etc.

On C models, the whole dash, including the glove box lid, was changed. For the lid the previous buffer (644 025 631 00) was too tall for the C, so they found a smaller one (999 703 035 50) to use.
