Help on hood hinges needed.

#1 Post by John Wurner »

58 T-2 car. Drivers side hood release(star wheel) is stuck. I have tried the usual and it will not move.
Passenger side will only release by using my finger to move the star wheel while holding the hood up.
I want to remove the star wheels and it appears that there is a bolt that holds that in place.
Is that correct, or by removing the bolt are there other items attached as well?
My hood has never been kinked and I want to keep her that way. 58 Conv D.

John

The service manual has a procedure for this. You need to remove the hood, remove the hinges, and rework, file and debur the moving parts and reassemble and oil.. It’s not too hard, and you can test the star release before putting the hood back on.

Thank you, John.
Is the star held in by a bolt?

Other than the downside of kinked hoods that is such a simple clever design.

The star wheel runs on a tube. Clamp a drill a little larger than the hole in the tube in a drill vise, vertically. Set the tube on the drill point, and drill out the tube from the other side. (Save the star wheel in the drawer with the other parts you will never ever have a use for.) The lower drill keeps the tube from spinning when you drill. I made a hood prop from a household twist-to-lock 1" dia. plastic handle my wife had surplused plus a couple of cane tips. Having repaired a hood kink (not kinked by me), I don't need any more. The hood prop fits beside the fuel tank on an A.

BTW: The hood doesn't always kink, Sometimes it tears the hinge pockets under the dash loose. While the mechanical hood holder worked well in the days before hydraulic struts, its day has gone.
