T2 Fram oil canister decal location

#1 Post by Spike Jones »

There seems to be two schools of thought on the location of the large decal on the FRAM canister:
1) On the front
2) On the left side under the "spigot" below the bracket

Any consensus?
Thanks,
Spike

#1 is the result of artistic license or guesswork.
#2 was S.O.P. by the original equipment manufacturer - - - - -

Hi Donald,
As a maker of one-of-a-kind high end jewelry creations, I have always tended toward artistic license. So, what to do? it seems to me to that the S.O.P. puts the decal in an awkward to read position and makes little sense.
Thanks,
Spike

Well...+1 with Mr. Zingg
Fram placed the decals on the canisters prior to delivery to Porsche for installation on a motor. The only way to be consistent in that placement is to reference some feature, the ONLY feature, of the canister...that being the "spigot". See the picture examples above. The same logic for the initial positioning of the canister cap. It's "your choice" only if you wish to be inaccurate with your restoration.

A few more pics of pre-A and 356A Fram oil filters with original decals intact.
It's worth repeating - - during the 1950s the nomenclature on the Fram lid decal always corresponded with the info on the canister decal (F-3, C-3, etc.)

The last two photos show the ubiquitous Fram F988 lid decal from mid- to late-1960s. It appeared on some engines in 356C cars and 912s (not on pre-As or 356As).
There was no corresponding large Fram decal on the side of the canister of the F988 oil filters.

Thanks to Donald, Victor, Peter & others. I felt that mine was wrong, so since the engine was out & the filter cannister off, I thought that I would put the decals on in the correct fashion before putting the engine back together. I'm not a raving purist, but since my car is an all numbers matching one, I try to keep the more visible aspects as per original as possible.

TRICK OF THE DAY - When applying the "water" type decals it is advisable to use a "decal set" liquid which is available at hobby stores and is used on model cars, airplanes, etc. After the decal is positioned and the water has been dried, the clear liquid is painted on the decal to prevent chipping, tearing and cracking.
The self adhesive type decals probably won't require the decal set.
