Metal battery cover

#1 Post by John Wurner »

Anyone know when Porsche changed from all metal battery covers to
other materials?
I have a metal cover listed in classified but not sure what cars this was intended for.

VW had metal covers for same size battery .
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

What makes you think that it's a Porsche part John?

Only because it came with a 59 Porsche. Could be something else, that is why I am asking
the question. I had an early Porsche once that had a similar cover. Could also have been VW.

A couple more picture angles/views may help John. It does not look like my 59A cover from what I can see.

John - the photo in your ad is of a PreA battery cover, including the retaining clips & springs. use started when battery first moved to center (51--52?), at first they had a wooden block in the top, holding them off of the battery terminals (top has small holes for slotted round head screws which showed), late preA wooden block replaced with rubber strip & metal flange.(as used on my 54). they could shift and short to terminal, with the retention spring glowing like a lightbulb, dangerous as hell), I started keeping a folded up tire tube on top of battery a insulator. they went away with introduction of the fiberboard version, I always thought with A cars.
would be useful to post picture in this thread. including inside picture.

Isn't the VW cover totally different in shape?

The VW cover is pretty much the same as the T6 cover.

And the T-6 is totally different than T-5 and earlier.

It is thin black plastic, only covers the top of the battery. I am sure it is pictured on Stoddard/ NLA’s sites.

I should have added that the VW cover was made of metal and resided under the back seat. It had insulation stuck inside the cover.https://www.californiaclassix.com/Berna ... remote.jpg

Some more pics of the cover.
There are two small "shelves" on the inside that are insulated, I suspect to keep terminals from touching metal.

that's the 53-54 version, with the shelf/flange & riveted rubber strip, but can still short to terminal if luggage kicks it sideways (experience talking), not certain when replaced with fiberboard version, i always thought with A.

Thank you, Ray. That clears up a lot.
I removed it from the registry because there was no agreement as to what it was.
