Pre A Speedometer with 1/10th meter

#1 Post by Ken Tuvman »

Trying to figure out if this is an OEM speedometer that went into a ’58 Pre-A
According to Ralph at NH Speedometer it is authentic but then some say the Pre-A speedo never had a 10th meter. Back of case is stamped 11.55

Any help is appreciated. TY > Ken

Hey Ken,

it is possible the 'guts' in your gauge are from a later car, the housing is definitely VDO from (~53 to Bt5).

I have seen one version of a pre A speedo with a 1/10th but the 10th was up at the top right of the odometer, not part of the trip odo.

Hello and Thanks Jules - I know you'd referred to it as a bitsa and from the pictures I'm seeing online, it looks like a 911 or 912 that were produced in the '60s

I do want to sell it but also want to represent it correctly - again, I believe Ralph at NHS knows his stuff but when I see pictures of pre-a speedos they do not have the 10th digit.

I'm assuming your "58 Pre-A" is a typo?
Your 11.55 speedo was likely installed in a '56 car. Same with this 12.55 unit.

My May '55 Hoffman coupe does not have tenths, but I don't know the date stamped on it.
I was told that this 10.54 Km speedo came out of a German delivery '55 coupe.

Thanks - the date stamp Is 11.55 & I was told it’s a pre-a but honestly don’t know if that’s correct.
Thx for your reply

The pre-A VDO face is set back much deeper than the A version, besides the different face. That would be the way to tell if a pre-A face was grafted onto an early A speedo.

The reason for the deeper set back face on the pre-A version is that the early versions of this speedo from 1954 had dished glass to minimize reflections, which was a carryover from the Veigel gauges that were used on pre-A bent-window cars up through May 1954.
