Original vs repro hubcap bt6

#1 Post by Joost van der Velden »

I have a set of hubcaps of which i presume the one on the left in the picture is original and the right one is a repro. The one on the left has a sticker made in Germany on the inside.

My Stoddard repros from maybe 4 years ago are nice but the emblems sit raised 2mm from the chrome due to the shape of the emblem mounting studs. I have fixed one of them by carefully denting the cap behind the emblem for clearance. I think I saw that Stoddard has “new improved” Super hubcaps now, maybe they fixed that.

There were some aftermarket hubcaps which didn't have an inside taper to properly fit the rim's recess next to the clips
and had a slight habit of NOT fitting the rim flatly and falling off! Don't ask how I know.

All original A/B hubcaps have date stamps on them.

Jim, could you please expound on the location of the date stamps as they pertain to the Super hubcaps?
Thanks, Bob

On the Super hubcaps, the date stamp should be on the outside lip.

Mike, thanks for the information, although I have looked at 2 of my hubcaps and don’t see any date stamps.
I bought the car in 1978, and I thought that they were original to the car.
Hmmm, they look original...

I'm not sure when they quit stamping them. I have to check mine. If I recall, originals are stamped "Lemmerz" and a date.

Mike, I should have mentioned that my car is an early ‘62, I suppose. I didn’t realize that there was a cut off date for such. May be why I couldn’t find it...

I bought a set from the local Porsche dealership in 1997. No date stamp.

The date stamp would be on the inside lip very near one of the set of holes for th hub cap puller. They can be very hard to see. You may have to clean the cap with some 000 steel wool. They also have a Lemmerz logo on them. I cant find an original hubcap to take some pictures. There have been repop hubcaps since the mid 70s. I have a set of those on my 62 Cab that I have owned since 1978Regards

Thanks Jim; I’ll take some bronze wool to them. I have had much success with the bronze, not nearly as “ambitious” , ie, harmful.

I checked mine which were supposed to be original. When I had them rechromed, maybe the stampings got buffed off. I have a few more stashed I can check.

does the ';MADE IN WESTERN GERMANY'' paper tag have any reality significance or just a deceptive touch. my set of supers that were on my 59 cab 31yrs. ago has those tags. thx tom

Good question, Tom. If you check out the pics of my hubcaps on the next thread, one has a sticker "Made in Germany". I suspect it is a repro made after the unification.
