Generator Band or Cover

#1 Post by Dennis Vogel »

Does anyone know which years of cars and / or models of generators were meant to have a brush cover aka ( dust band / shield)?

Ours did not have one, but there was a lot that was not correct with this engine. It is a Bosch LG 200 / 6 / 2600 L19 which I'm pretty certain is correct for a 1960 Super 90. The cover seems to be implied in the parts catalog diagram, but there is no callout or part number for it. I've colored it red in the attached.

Thanks for your help.

The earlier cars had a louvered cover; later ones no louvers. I think the ones without louvers were from the early B's on.

Is there one universal size? I only have one point of reference, but wonder if 6v is a different diameter than 12v. I am going to have to source one, and want to make sure I get the correct part. Thanks.

912's did use a slightly larger diameter 12v generator (with matching stand) than the 356 6v, but most all 356 12v conversions use a 12v generator the same size as the 6v to keep the proper look.

I think most 912s had the same diameter generator as a 356. It was only larger on some or all later 912s, enough larger to be obvious.

Dennis, use the word "strap" in your searches, it seems to get far more results than band or cover.

Pricey?? Just make it. Simplify the closing method with a simple "L". Skip the louvers.

BTW: Early 912s had the small generator, later ones, "69 long wheelbase I think, had the larger ones.

Dennis: you haven't indicated what year your car is to determine if the generator is missing the louvered or smooth strap. If you search in The Samba, (356 Porsche generator strap) there are several smooth ones and a louvered one has been replicated reasonably priced. If you need the smooth one, buy one with the screw.

I bought mine from Sierra Madre for about $ 60.00 - it is of Repro quality, but I had difficulty finding one for a reasonable price.
