Correct hubcaps by year

#1 Post by Roger Bowley »

Is there an easy reference site that identifies correct hubcaps by year? By model?

That is one I do not have. I have "Technical and Restoration Guide" by 356 Registry; "Technical and Restoration Guide" Vol. 2 by RPM; "Guide to Do-It-Yourself Restoration" by J. Kellogg; and "The 356 Porsche" A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity by B. Johnson. I have not found the information I'm looking for in those books. Any posts on the Registry Site which might provide the info I'm looking for? I tried several searches but no luck. Thanks, R

the newly revised Brett Johnson book is a great addition to those books.

hub caps are not that complicated. It's either drum brake baby moons for normal cars and nipple hubcaps for Supers and S90. Disk brake cars got flat caps, 3/63 without crest, then with either tarnished chrome or enameled (option) crest. Done, unless you want to get really really technical with very early Pre-A stuff or a 4 cam.

I will add to this, the nipple hubcaps started in 1957 so even the early Supers had baby moons.

There are at least three versions of the baby moons: Through mid-1954 (unmarked), mid-1954-59 (Lemmerz 9916) and 356B (Lemmerz 9160).

This was discussed in a thread from about four years ago: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=41776

I believe the speedster 1600S also had baby moons not the nipple ones despite being supers.

And of course the GT’s had alloy moons.

Hah! I should have said "all 356's, including supers, had baby moons until 1957 when the supers got the nipple hubcaps" !!

I checked my stash of hub caps. Two repros, maybe three but one marked “Made in Germany” and one interesting one with a cable that was either to prevent theft of in case one popped off the rim. None are stamped with a date or Lemmerz. Can you imagine the damage to the car if it was flopping around?!
