Karmann badge on a 64 C

#1 Post by mark bibler »

Has anyone seen a Karmann coach builder enamel badge that is typically found on B cars ...on a C? The C coupe that I recently bought has one on the usual spot in front of the rt. door. I like it, but suspect it should be removed. Thanks all. Mark

It should be removed. I am sure that someone somewhere will say that they have one that came originally on their C, but no, they were discontinued on late T-6cars.

I owned a very early 1964 SC, which had several B features such as no under dash ash tray bracket and fuel sender, and the car had an enamel Karmann body badge. The car had the original paint and had been driven less than 55,000 miles. I would suggest that, depending on the VIN, this type badge could be correct.

That car was a '63 calender year build, but pretty late so probably more like December than July.

Tom, do have pictures of that car? I would love to see some. It is always great to find any exception to the "rules".

Never say never and never say always :D

Also, Mark, it can always stay whether it "should" be there or not, especially if paintwork is involved.

Anything's possible! Having said that, here are some questions I would ask. Has your car ever been restored or repainted sometime in the past? Are there any other 356-B T-6 aspects of your car? Your car is the 1,553rd 356-C built in 1963 if my math is correct and my serial number sequence is correct. I would doubt that Karmann would get this aspect of your car wrong this deep into the production cycle. But who knows, anything's possible. Perhaps a forsenic examination of this aspect of your car is called for. How about a close up picture of the badge.

215246 does not have the badge.
Another 64 C Coupe that I owned over 45 years ago (forgotten the VIN) also did not have a badge.

Wow.

B features: No ashtray surround, B dash knob placement, grab handle, glovebox lock, washer nozzles, Ponto Stabil mirror, recliners appear to be for a B, the rear torsion tube extends like a B, it has no under dash map light and the fresh air lever has the slot on top.

C features: Heater lever instead of knob, disc brakes, arm rest with no door pulls (all of which could have been added/changed later of course), but the VIN is for a C.

One other weird thing, it has a radio but no speakers.

Never say never and never say always.

Thanks Tom! Any other pictures?? :D
