This braided rubber hose discussed above was probably installed on only early 356 C cars -- a couple chassis number listed above. You can see how the hose deteriorated and was quickly replaced by a convoluted plastic version to go on thru the 912. That rubber hose ? looking for it but the diameter isn't made at the moment.

I'll measure it when I go to my man cave - probably tomorrow ...
Just like shown in Greg Bryan and Dave Whittick's photos, my 5/64 delivery 356 SC still has the braided rubber hose with Norma clamps. Still looks great. We've owned it since 1973, second owners.

Brett Johnson's book shows this braided rubber hose.

Draft tube down through the tin next to the dip stick to vent under the engine on to the muffler to stop it rusting.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

The original owner of my April 1964 SC just sent me a picture of the engine and it's got the braided hose. Unfortunately some flippers got ahold of my car prior to me buying it and decided the plastic replacement would make the engine compartment more attractive. If anyone has one lying around I would love to buy it off them...

Diane and others-
While looking at this breather hose, you might want to clean out the in line filter/"flame arrestor". It is almost always overlooked. For some more detail, you can look at my Blog on my website here: https://www.enginesinback.com/blog

Paul is there one on an SC? Completely different air filter than your C with Zeniths. Maybe Brad or Jim B knows? Part # 616 108 222 00 Listed but Out of Stock at PRS356 I couldn't find the part at Stoddard https://www.prs356.co.uk/porsche-356-pa ... -and-356c/

Yes Greg I know the SC has the breather hose, my question is does it have the spark arrestor?

Ah - maybe not - I think that's a 912 thing and why it has the different (larger) hose end - but I'll check tomorrow ...

The larger flame arrestor piece for late 912 and all 911 is p/n 901-107-729-00 in stock at Stoddard NLA. The smaller 356 version, 616-108-222-00 is long gone. Those pieces appear to me to be some sort of universal piece maybe use on other makes of cars during the time.

Paul H., besides the date code, is there any manufacturer's logo on the part?

Brad, no logo or manufacturers name.
Greg- please look at my post #81. These flame arrestors were used in 356C cars, in the air filter housing. They clog up and prevent good engine venting! Yes, it is a 912 thing as well, but for the 912 it was made larger and moved into the air filler can (from in the air filter housing like on 356 C with Zenith). There is a link in my post 81 for more detail.
Doug- not sure about 356 SC. Nothing here I can check.

Paul - I did look at your excellent web site and I stand corrected - I have to admit I've never worked on a C with Zenith carbs - at least not in this century.
The SC does not have anything in the air cleaner that I'm aware of - not sure about the outlet on the oil canister. I'll look at my car later today.

If the purpose of the fitting was a flame arrestor, then wouldn't the contruction of the Knecht air filter serve that purpose? The black canister-type air filters for the Zenith carbs have it built in to the base of the filter. I never noticed it until Paul pointed it out. So, flame arrestor or a primitive positive crankcase valve (PCV)? So was venting the oil fumes from the oil breather/filler can was probably an early anti-pollution effort and also reduced the pressure inside the engine?

Mike - I was thinking along similar lines but I’m not sure - I looked at my oil can today and there is simply an empty pipe with a right angle bend in the oil can. However, the pipe that attaches to the SC Knecht gravel guard air filter goes right into the middle of the filter by the carb intake, so I don’t see any ‘flame arrester’ function.
I have no idea what the function is of the device in the Zenith air filter and the 912 but it might have something to do to reduce the effect of a carb backfire ...
