window rollers

#1 Post by Etienne Kerkhoffs »

I have three differrent window rollers. I would like to know for which type they would be correct. Maybe 2 weren't used at all at 356's.

Left one has a little black knob and no number (solid handle)
Center one has a larger black knob with number 111-113.837.583A and a VW logo and another circular logo at the backside. (same logo as in an original door opening handle).
Right one has a VW knob and number 113.837.583A with a VW logo and another diamand-shaped logo at the backside.

Thanks, Etienne

None of those handles are correct. The one on the left is from some other "off brand" car. The one on the right is a VW handle and the one in the middle is a Repro 356B/C crank handle. A "correct" window crank handle for a 58 and later 356 has a "hook" on the end of the handle much like a male Salmon. The handle will not have a part number cast into the back side, either. The door lock hande is another story, though. The "correct" door lock handles are garden variety VW parts, without the "hook" on the end. I'll bet most of us have never noticed that there is a difference in the ends of the handles between the window crank and the door lock handles!

Jim,

I hate to do it and wouldn't chance it if I wasn't positive, but I'll have to disagree with you that all original window cranks have the "salmon nose" on the end. I have two unrestored Drauz cars and they don't have this feature. I can supply some photos over the weekend.

I've never seen an actual window crank handle, be it a 356A with a beige knob, or a 356B/C with a black knob that didn't have the hook. The handles have a small "2" cast into the underside and that is all . If your handles have VW part numbers in the underside of them, I would be suspicious of their origin. Could be a "Drauz" thing, though. This could be the start of some more fun trivia.

Thanks for dissolving my mystery.
Of course, that brings me to the next question; has anyone has a pair of correct window handles for my A T2?

Thanks again, Etienne

OK Jim, are you ready to get in the mud and enjoy yourself? I'll show you an A type and a B type handle without the salmon nose. Both are from unmolested, unrestored interiors.

The handle on the left is from my '59 sunroof, built in late '58 which has the salmon nose. The one on the right is from my '59 ConvD, also built late '58 which does not. This is at least one data point indicating that Reutter may have used one type and Drauz another.
Image

The ConvD handle has the VW logo and part number similar to the straight door lock handle.

Here are the pair of ConvD handles. Don't you love that nice crazing patina on the knobs?
Image

Here's a shot of my Roadster handle. It is the same as the ConvD handle except the color of the knob, of course.

I believe that for some reason, Drauz used the VW type window crank handles with Porsche knobs instead of the "salmon nose" handles which Reutter used. Maybe they were cheaper and Drauz was draining every ounce of profit they could.

Chuck

Leave it to you to have unrestored Drauz cars! 99.9% of them are over restored and have no provenance. Just goes to show that one can never say never!
