On restorations....again

#1 Post by Roy Smalley »

Ran across this old post by a now passed on restorer. Of course many of the more interesting cars have substantially increased in value and along with that, the cost to restore. Gary's comments were relative in 1999 and some 20 odd years later, are still.

Thanks, Roy, and I'm going to repeat my previous comment. It should be required reading fir those contemplating a restoration.

I stopped customer restorations nearly ten yours ago. I did a car for a good friend at cost, my time free. It went well over budget and schedule. He has not spoken to me since. In today's world, with the cost of parts and labor, I cannot brake even on a 356 restoration. So, I just do cars for myself and have more fun and less headaches. Presently I'm building a 1948 Devin race car. Just for fun. ...........Jim. PS. Thanks Roy.

That’s too bad to have lost a friend, especially considering that I bet he was treated very well. When my friend wanted his Isetta done we figured out that we wouldn’t endanger our friendship, he had someone else do it.
Restoration has many pitfalls.

People ask us to work on their car from time to time, we always say the same thing, we don't do outside work. I don't want customers like that.
