356 A camshaft

#1 Post by Mark James Ready »

Unable to find new camshaft for 356 A N engine anywhere.
USA, UK, Europe.
All out of stock.. Karmann Konnection in UK said their supplier in Germany could maybe supply one in 6 months!
Looks like will work with existing camshaft.

Is your old one pretty good? Where are you located? I may have a nice one if yours is bad.

Hi Martin
Brisbane Australia.
Present cam is not too bad.
Just thought a new one best.
We are going to have it properly assessed etc and go with that.

After the engine has been run, each cam lobe and its lifter are a pair. One doesn't mix up the lifters when reinstalling a cam. New cam, new lifters or resurfaced lifters. Reground cam, same as new.
You might check to see if you can get your cam reground: try NEU TECH or Elgin.

Martin: how much wear is "PRETTY GOOD"? Elgin will grind you a cam of your choice and probably provide you with correct super style forged cam followers. DO NOT USE CAST LIFTERS. I think your luck will improve with one way shipping rather than here and back to you. zim

I just refinished 80 tappets--w/a slight crowned surface; Some faces showed no rotation!

Hi
new cam blanks have wide lobes and are available. new steel lifters are also available. i would recommend a "C" stock grind with new lifters. I have a NOS factory C 15 cam but i keep it as a sample i am in disbelief what retailers are getting for cams now.
