Watkins Glen Video 9/10/22

#1 Post by C J Murray »

Here are 2 videos of the same race. There were 50 cars on track, 19 cars in my performance group. I did take first place but the lap times were somewhat weak(as was rudely brought to my attention). I was 3 seconds a lap faster last September but track and atmosphere conditions can vary. Today I got the video from the ex-Bob Sharp Datsun 2000 that was behind me and I have to say that my lines leave a little to be desired. I decided to post it anyway. Enjoy.

My home trach, if you will. I raced a 64 - 356 there with SVRA. I use the term "Race" loosely, as I was always last. As Prescott Kelly told me "Keep your line" and stay out of my way. I did as I was told Cliff. .....................Jim.

I would have thought a water cooled 2 liter would have had a big power advantage, but it didn’t seem to.
John, in this case you are not supposed to agree with Cliff. 😀

That is ok. I have already taken abuse from others that implied that my lap times were rain lap times(the rain really adds around 15 seconds to the lap time). There are some other reasons that I was slower than last year such as a different engine with 1000 less rpm which caused the use of different gear selections in a couple of corners(same trans). I can come up with some more excuses like I had the wrong color face shield on(but I didn't). Sometimes the classic line is not the fastest but I was still not using all the track and I have to admit it.

I think the Datsun weighs twice what the Devin does. The Lotus 7 weighs less than the Devin and should make around the same power but it is an aerodynamic brick. Three cars with those differences made for a fun race.

C J,

What's that lying on the track that the Datsun 2000 dodges at 7:15 of his video? Looks like a shock or suspension parts.

FWIW a lot of people aren't aware of the Playback Speed control on YouTube, under the settings ("gear" or "wheel") icon. Set to 75% is my frequent choice.

Thanks for the speed tip behind the gear. I never knew that existed and needed it so many times!

As a musician, I use it all the time for transcribing chords and melodies by ear, and fingerings by sight off YouTube. The pitch (key) of the music is not affected.

It's also great for raising comprehension of rapidly spoken words and following instructional videos.

The celebration downtown Watkins Glen on the Friday (9/9) of the Vintage Grand Prix weekend is always a huge event. The turnout for the Hagerty Vintage Concours this year was some serious competition. My '60 Cabriolet, that I just finished restoring this year, won Best of Show! Not bad for a first time amateur.

I didn't know about the playback speed, thanks.

I am not sure what the debris was on the track but it did make me nervous a bit. From my car it looked like an exhaust pipe and in my car with belts on you can't avoid objects by moving your head. I was expecting a black flag to stop the race so that it could be removed. Watkins Glen does not allow corner workers to come from behind the guard rails/fences(aka blue bushes) while the track is "live" so they have to remove all the cars to do anything.

Congratulations!

I participated in the reenactment of the original street race this year for the first time. The crowds were huge. I don't really like driving a race car on the road but my grandchildren were there and I thought they would get a kick out of the event. I hate to say that the potential for disaster is high. We did 2 laps of the old course and the idiot in a Shelby GT350 in front of us was doing long high speed(40-60mph?) burnouts while driving past crowds standing at the edge of the road. I suspect that that guy is also the guy that ruins the local cars and coffee by doing the same thing. I won't be doing the reenactment again.

The whole vibe of the Watkins Glen weekend is magic, a throwback to the days that our cars were new, with roads filled with great sports cars. Every sports car lover should attend this event.

In retrospect I'm amazed I even noticed it watching the video full speed.
