Sticking Brake Pedal 356B

#1 Post by Ken Tuvman »

I’ve not yet overhauled my pedal assembly and brake pedal isn’t returning all the way when released.

Are there any other parts I’ll need to overhaul assembly? I’m certain it’s probably in need of a new bushing & spring & a good cleaning!

Thanks > Ken

You might try cleaning and lubing it first they are pretty easy to overhaul but most of the time its just a dry bushing.

Thanks John - interesting experience this afternoon- temperature is in low 70’s today & low humidity- drove @60 miles & brake pedal not sticking but does on a hot humid day - how does heat & humidity affect braking action & brake fluid moving through the lines?

The fluid in the lines doesn’t mind what the weather is, at least if there are not arctic conditions. You might try squirting some oil on both sides of the pedal pivot and the brake pushrod pivot. Might get off easy.

The pedal area is prone to DIRT AND RUST since it is never cleaned nor lubricated. I think you will find that purchasing a restored set of pedals will be more expedient than battling the rust and corrosion that 60+ years of life have inflicted on your car. Many times the pedal shaft will have to have a major reconstruction. Zim

Good point, Al. It is an area that is out of sight and out of mind but vital to operating the car.
Welcome back!

There’s a definite side wobble on brake pedal - an overhaul will make a good winter project. Thanks for taking time to respond to my question.

Ken, You may be missing the large washer on the pedal shaft. It sits between the pedal and the pedal base. Look at parts blowup of a pedal set & you will see the washer. That may be the issue with wobble.
