Re: Whats wrong with this rear brakes photo?
The park brake cable is too tight on the right side, probably needs adjusting near the rear torsion tube.

Dave, one issue is that you have B brake shoes mixed with earlier brake components.DaveErickson wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 2:26 pm Whats wrong with these photos of the rear brakes? More to say about symptoms after a few replies...
Your horizontal bars and hand brake levers should be updated or modified (below), to avoid interference with the reinforced lining carriers of the B brake shoes.

Also the brake lever should be attached to the top hole on the shoe on both sides.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Re: Whats wrong with this rear brakes photo?
The symptom is that the right side E Brake cannot be adjusted. The reason is the pivot point for the ebrake lever, it is using the wrong hole on the brake shoe, as David points out. I should have used the top hole. My question is, why do the brake shoes come with two holes for the ebrake lever?

Re: Whats wrong with this rear brakes photo?
Jon, thanks for the information on using B brake shoes with A components. I was not aware of the need to modify the A parts... I bought the shoes from Zim's and they said they were correct for an A, no caveats...

The lower holes are spring attachment points, when the brake shoes are used on the front axle.DaveErickson wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 3:44 pmMy question is, why do the brake shoes come with two holes for the ebrake lever?
Good catch, David... :-)

Here is why the A parts need modification:

Re: Whats wrong with this rear brakes photo?
Jon, that’s very helpful, and I’d never heard about that before. On a good day I might have discovered it. I am collecting mismatched A and B brakes for two VWs so this is right on time.

Re: Whats wrong with this rear brakes photo?
Why would any vendor sell you a part that requires modifying without mentioning it or without providing instructions for the modification? Some parts are directly interchangeable, some can be modified to fit and others just won't work. The customer cannot be expected to know all of this when he places his order. He's relying on the vendor's knowledge and experience.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Wes, if a vendor is sent B shoes to be relined, or as exchange cores, then he should return B shoes to the customer.Wes Bender wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 7:46 pm Why would any vendor sell you a part that requires modifying without mentioning it or without providing instructions for the modification?
Maybe Dave can provide additional details on this purchase, service or exchange... if cores were provided, were they A or B cores?

Hi Wes
it's the installer's responsibility. we are lucky that we have vendors that know more than the original manufacturer.

Re: Whats wrong with this rear brakes photo?
Jon, I ordered the shoes based on the description (Brake Shoe Set, Oversize, Fits all 356 w/drum Brakes, Use on Front or Rear), received them then returned my cores and got a credit. I also bought Zim's disk brake conversion setup, so I still have the front brakes, complete. They are the original A type without the flanges.Jon Bunin wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 8:15 pmWes, if a vendor is sent B shoes to be relined, or as exchange cores, then he should return B shoes to the customer.Wes Bender wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 7:46 pm Why would any vendor sell you a part that requires modifying without mentioning it or without providing instructions for the modification?

Re: Whats wrong with this rear brakes photo?
I'm sure they were relined. Zim's description says "Remanufactured brake shoes with 7.5mm thick lining for brake drums 281mm in diameter."
