Topping off the Transaxle

#1 Post by Dave Erickson »

Is it ok to top off the transaxle with the rear wheels dangling (car on jack stands and not level, high in the rear)?

That will result in it being over filled. I think it was discussed recently.

Would it be ok to fill it with the axles dangling, then with the filling cap off lower to the ground and catch the excess, and replace the cap and clean the residual?

Because of the way the tires scrub in and out due to the suspension geometry, I have found that it is easier (for me at least) to back the car up on ramps at the rear. I can slide under and easily drain and refill the differential/transmission. It's not quite level, but doesn't have much affect on the filling. Alternatively, jack up the rear and put the jack stands under the axles rather than the torsion bar tube and lower the jack. The recent discussion included the approximate amount of overfill with the drooping axles if I remember correctly.

I missed the recent discussion. I can put the car on 4 jack stands to level it, but I don’t own any ramps for the rear wheels. Maybe I will just take it to Oil Can Henry’s. They can’t screw up topping the transmission, can they?

The discussion was back last September. Dick Weiss indicated that, if you fill it to the bottom of the filler plug hole with the axles drooping, it will be approximately 1/2" higher than normal. Probably not enough to affect things or to worry about, Jim. I did it that way too for many years.

Here's the link to the discussion: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53365&p=397714&hili ... il#p397714

Regarding Oil Can Henry's, there's a guy in your neighborhood named Dave who I would trust more to do it right.....
