The Times has a paywall but if you Google "LA Times Beverly Hills Car Club" there is a site you can read the article.

A friend offered to sell me his desirable 356A last year and after looking it over, I passed...it had a cool look but that was unfortunately age on top of bunch of terrible metalwork from 30 years ago. Alex Manos ended up buying the car for a ridiculous amount over what I thought it was worth. I was valuing it as a candidate for restoration...Manos was no doubt counting on flipping to an ignorant buyer.

I had a customer’s scruffy MGA in my shop several years ago, I told him it was worth $2000 tops. Alex bought it over the phone for 8-10,000$, didnt even see a flip phone picture.

Ken Tuvan, the San Diego promotional video and a cover shot on the City's latest promo-magazine has the green 356 with surfboards as well as a white VW bug, are owned and driven by my friend Scott Meyers who works in the film and photography industry, he bought the 356 a few years ago from Maine. He has been involved in the VW community for years.

I read the article and nothing in it surprised me in the least. Hey, they're a used car dealer!

I actually don’t think they are dishonest but I am sure people often buy cars that are much worse than they expected due to cleverly shot but real pictures.

He is certainly not hurting the value of our cars.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

I have bought a car from them. I knew what I was getting so did not have any expectations. I do not know if they did, or a previous owner, but it was clear it had been quickly painted and put together so as to be able to be sold as a driving car. When we stripped the paint solvents bubbled up under the warmth of the heat gun. The paint job must not have been older then 3 months. The car ran but I would not have trusted it for any drive longer than the driveway.

As mentioned their business model is very different compared to other dealers. Its all about volume. They focus on assortment and not customer service or care. As long as you are aware of this and act accordingly I would not hesitate buying a car from them. Sadly a lot of first time buyers are probably not aware.

FWIW the print article was in Sunday's (Aug 7) edition. Section A, starting on Page A16.
