Oil Filter canister adaptation

#1 Post by Vincent Gillespie »

I'm currently working on an engine ('55 1500) I've had for years and the oil filter canister which, judging by the tiny bits of green paint and decal remaining, I'm pretty sure is a Mann, has a wierd addition to the top.

Apart from being able to use it as an ad hoc pressure cooker has anyone any idea what the hell was the idea behind this?

Oil pressure relief valve would be my guess.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

My guess is that it is used to let the air out after a filter change.

Oil Filter canisters make convenient vessels for use as pressure pre-oilers.

Thanks everyone I'll poke around a bit more with these ideas in mind.

PS Am I correct in my idea that it's a Mann filter?

I am assuming that you will either weld the hole shut or replace the cover. I doubt if you’d want their invention.
