Vintage Raydyot Mirrors

#1 Post by Joe Ferris »

The original owner of my '62 installed a pair of original Raydyot mirrors on my car sometime back in the 60's. Is anyone else running them? Recently had a buddy tell me they were made of unobtanium and that I should take them off and put them away. I can't find any originals online but a whole lot of re-pops. If anyone else is running them or can give a quick history lesson, I'd love to see/hear. The glass is a little discolored but I must say, they work beautifully.

I remember seeing them in the late 60's - early 70's - they were popular on race cars
Talbots were much more common on street cars.

Some full pics of them. My car has been repainted once since new and the mirror relocation was done at that time. The original owner complained about the functionality in stock locations.

Absolutely, I loved the look when I first saw the car. Just barely decided to look into what exactly they were all about. Really cool to see the racing history associated with them.

My Daytona winning A Coupe still has the original Raydot on it.

Maybe they are made out of Unobtanium...

My '58 Speedster raced with a pair of Raydyot side mirrors since about 1964. Prior to that was a single Lucas.

I HATE the raydot mirrors, especially when mounted on the fenders. I have a pristine 67 mgb gt with the special package that had two raydots mounted on the fenders. FORGET trying to easily adjust them, and they looked like two pimples on that beautiful GT front end. I took them off, had our body shop weld the holes and refinish the paint. I took the old beat up set and sold them on e bay to a mustang guy for $450.00!!!!!!!!
There are also cheap repops make is someone really has to have a set. I think that Moss Motors sells them.

Haha, I guess that's what makes the car scene so cool. So many personalities and tastes. If all these cars looked the same, what would be the point IMO. That being said, I really dig that MG with those mirrors 8)

Also, on my 356 I can't imagine any other mirror from a functionality standpoint. They show me everything clearly on both sides. Not bad having the bragging rights to boot I guess haha.
