OIL CHANGE AFTER BREAKIN

#1 Post by Jay Darlington »

I've got about 200 miles on the break-in oil (Royal Purple break-in oil ) so now i'm thinking of changing it and useing Mobil 1 advanced synthetic 10- 30. i know its an open-ended question but what do YOU think? also should one add a zinc additive. the Mobil 1 does have zinc at 900ppm i believe.

I always go back to factory recommendations. Here in So. Cal. I use 20-50 Valvoline Racing oil. The synthetics tend to find places to leak that regular oil does not. This has been my choice for 50+ years. ...........Jim.

20/50 or 15/40 at a minimum. Any diesel oil of that value will have enough ZDDP. I would recommend Mobil 1 or Shell Rotella synthetic. They are widely available and well priced.
Just my opinion of course.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

If you have only the stock 7% filtration system, it doesn't matter.

I have built more than 2 dozen engines, 356, 356 Carrera, VW, English Ford, BMW, Coventry Climax, and Mercedes Diesel over the last 60 years, all of them successful. My oil procedure for the street engines was and is to use the usual engine oil, Mobil 1 15W-50 or Swepco 20W-50 these days, Quaker State 10W-40 previously, for 300 miles, change it, run to 1000 miles, change it and then on to the regular change interval: 2,000 miles.
The modern break in oils are essentially honing oils whose purpose is to hone the cylinder walls and piston rings (and everything else in the engine) in the first 300 miles. If there is any advantage or disadvantage to this it is obviously very slight.
Obviously, I agree with Jim above, except that I went to the QS multi vis before Porsche recommended multi vis engine oils.

Is it reasonable to breakin a new engine on Mobil 1? I am using Rotella but wondered about that.
Jay, I think 1200 ppm Zn is considered best although I am not sure how that was figured. I’ll blindly trust it.

For a street engine I always break in with conventional oil and because Shell Rotella has at least 1200 ppm of ZDDP and is easily available I use that. I usually run about an hour on the test stand then 500 miles in the car and if no smoke except a puff or two on start up I will switch to Mobil 1 or Rotella synthetic. These days because it appears that the ambient summer temps are higher than I ever remember I like the added protection of Mobil 1 20/50, though the rotella 15/40 is probably just as good.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

I didn’t know there was Rotella synthetic, I’ll have to check the label when I get back to town to see what I’m using during break in. Hope I got the right one.

why would a 20/50 or 15/40 be any different than 10/30, what would be the difference. for instance i just bought 10/30 should i take it back? thanks

10/30 is thinner under most conditions than the others listed. OK for modern engines with tight clearances. You need slightly heavier oil. I would take it back and exchange it for 20/50.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

10/30 unless it is a special formulation will also not have nearly enough ZDDP. Before you put any oil in your 356 engine check the MSDS for ZDDP level. Below 1200 ppm is not considered sufficient.

well in a Google search, i found that 10/30 Mobil1advanced synthetic is rated at 900ppm, the 15/50 is rated at 1300ppm. i'll take it back tomorrow and get the 15/50, thanks David
