Right Martin, thanks; I forgot about that.

I found some suitable pry bars and tweeking the muffler was not that hard, but cutting the bottom reinforcement bracket helped. No heat needed to move the pipes around, but the reinforcement will need to be rewelded.

Al Zim is on vacation from posting until October 6. He has asked me to post the following on his behalf:

The following situations will cause the muffler not to fit in the engine.
1: The case has been fly cut and line bored. Now the heads are closer together.
2: The heads have been resurfaced: Now the heads are closer together.
3: the compression ratio has been altered with the use of more than one thin shim. Now the heads are further apart.
4. Compression is further reduced with the “Porsche” thick one MM gaskets. Pushing the heads further apart.
5. Cylinder height is not at factory specifications. It could be wider or narrower. Neither will fit the muffler.
6: The exhaust pipes from cylinder 1 and 3 do not fit because the heads are closer together…causing a misfit in the muffler.
7. The production design of the three (3) piece case was completed about 68 years ago. Obviously things were different then. So were the specifications and manufacturing procedures..
8. The worst part of this equation is that everyone thinks that these are simple engines! They are not.

All of those points by Al are valid but when the bottom pipes miss by 6 mm and the manifold flanges are not parallel and the vertical alignment is off by 3 to 5 degrees then medieval methods like a hydraulic ram or cutting and rewelding are the only solution. Then the Dansk factory welds crack and you start all over again. Call Eisenmann and ask for the price of a stock muffler. Email Jim Learmonth and ask him how his muffler is and ask for a picture.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Here at our shop, we have to "Tweek" every after market muffler. Sometimes that means cutting things off and rewelding. The stock mufflers just slide on. ...........Jim.

Mine has the smaller dia. pipes that are a good fit to the 1&3 pipes. I haven't contacted Zim's, but I'm in a hard spot here. I need the muffler to fit and I am picking up the car at AI in two weeks, then installing the motor, no time left to fool around, so I will just make the Dansk muffler work.
At risk of being impertinent, what's the hurry? An important concours or auction coming up?

That's a tough one. If you lived closer I'd gladly let you borrow the OEM muffler off my '59 Coupe. It's got patina but doesn't leak.

I got it fitted, but I can't guarantee it won't leak!

Does anyone complain about Leistritz exhaust systems when it comes to all these "dimensional" offsets? Or are they so rare that no one has fitted a "new" one in years?

The engine width is usually within .010 “ of standard, which is not much when dealing with a muffler.

I measured the used Leistritz I have, and it is 3-3.5" longer than the Dansk 356A muffler. Was your NOS Leistritz a 356A model or the one for C/SC?

Yes, the B/C muffler is a couple of inches longer than the A muffler. So, years ago I just dented the top ends to clear. Ran it that way on my D for a long time. Now it is back on my SC where it came from.
