Mystery piece - from tack cable?
Hello,
I had the oil leak at the tack and followed directions to remove the tach cable from the housing and clean it. After lubing it and reinstalling it I found the following mystery piece on the floor. Anybody know where it came from? Thanks

Kind of looks like the oil seal and shim at the tach drive.

No, its not that. This is much smaller, its only about 1/4" OD. I'm thinking it goes it goes on the tach end of the cable, just not sure if goes in the tube before the cable is inserted, or on the square drive after the cable is inserted (between the tach and the cable housing).

I'll check the B parts manual.

Dumb guess but maybe a spacer used for packing and shipping by the manufacturer to keep the cable from moving around.

As good a guess as any, David. I never heard of a seal inside the tach itself.

I just had mine apart, no seal or spacer on it.

Todd, that part looks like the retainer for the bottom headlight screw.

Thanks for the suggestions, but have eliminated them due to size. I have continued searching myself and found the following picture. This may be it - opinions?

Agree with Mike, sure looks like the seal at the tach drive, maybe PO had put this on the wrong cable end at tach.

How many different things have you worked on or even carried through the shop since the last time you swept the floor? Consensus seems to be that, considering the size, it doesn't belong anywhere on your tach cable.

Re: Mystery piece - from tack cable?
The black seal is around 1/4" OD and the proper seal has a lip which is toward the pump-cover's casting.
The seal and the shim is inserted before the cable is attached to the nose of the casting w/the ring-nut.
The shim keeps the seal's protrusion (face) about 0,5mm so it won't rotate; Usually, when the seal
gets hardened w/age, it may wear the depth of the bore and some material should be removed from
the casting's nose so the seal will get squeezed when the cable is attached. (The seal could be glued, too)

Re: Mystery piece - from tack cable?
Dick - thanks for the detail about the seal. I had installed it but the old one was in backwards so I put the new one in the same way. I will remove it and turn it around as you suggested. I did notice the seal was not out past the casting by much, if any. The old one was so hard i broke apart when removing it and it was able to spin in the housing. I will try and file the housing a little to get a little more protrusion.
As to my mystery piece I guess it will stay in my spare / extra parts drawer . (there's always spare parts left over, right It is not the seal at the transmission case / tach drive as that has been replaced and they are different. My initial post was a little misleading as when I said I found it on the floor, I meant the floor of the car in front of the drivers seat. Since I had only removed the tach cable I just assumed that's where it came from, but consensus is it didn't. So I will keep an eye out to see if anything else appears - who knows, maybe I just tracked it in on my sneakers. Thanks for all the advice.
