My Kardex show the gearbox number as 80287-741-2C
My understanding is that the 80287 is the serial number and 741 is the gearbox type.
What does the 2C mean?
Meaning of gearbox identifiers

Re: Meaning of gearbox identifiers
2C with BBBD gears is the standard gearing for USA delivered 356C and SC. If you go into the technical library and find Vic Skirmants "Transmission Identification" article he goes through the transmissions used over the years.

Re: Meaning of gearbox identifiers
Doug's suggestion is good. Another source for information on the meaning of "2A" is the little spec book, "Information Please". That is the book they gave all Porsche mechanics when they went to school. I got my copy at Johnson Pacific, the Northern CA. Porsche distributor, right at the intersection of Highway 580 and 280, after a class in 1975. It is well worth hunting down a copy, it is full of the trivia and details all 356 owners love (like "what is the torque for the M10 bolts that attach the rocker arm frame to the head". Copies show up on Ebay frequently:Doug McDonnell wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 1:30 am 2C with BBBD gears is the standard gearing for USA delivered 356C and SC. Another source is the Quick Reference page in the Technical Library. After you login to the website, go to Technical Library then Quick Reference in the middle right of the page. On the lower left of the QR page is a table of excerpts that contains all the specs and graphs from the workshop manuals. Gear graphs are graphs of the transmission gears. See below.
