Wheel Valve Stem Retainer

#1 Post by Dennis Vogel »

I am trying to determine what is the appropriate valve stem retainer for the wheels of our 1960 356B T5 Super 90. Or as the parts catalog calls it the "Retainer spring Rubber valve". At first it seemed pretty straight forward, as there is a drawing in the parts catalog with a spring clip and parts number 901.361.121.00. When I look it up at the usual vendors, they indicate it is meant for C / disc brake cars. The 356B is a drum brake. Can anyone clarify? Thank you.

early valve stems are larger diameter than the later 911 versions.

Thanks Brad.

I take it that means I need to show up to the tire shop with my own special larger diameter valve stems too? I am not finding those in the factory parts catalog, or at Stoddard. Only a 1 1/4" .453 rim hole offering that seems to be for 1965 and later.

There are two types; one for drum brakes, the other for disc. The difference is the rim. I have them on my drum brake car.

Original wheels,
Up thru early 911, have "large" valve stem holes, .625 inch dia. Valve stem is
Later wheels have "small" valve stem holes, .453 inch dia
If you have had your 356 wheels re-chromed, later rims might have been used with the smaller valve stem holes.
Measure the hole and order the correct below:
SIC 361 415 00 for kit of stems, holders, caps for .625 dia
SIC 361 413 00 for kit of stems, holders caps for .453 dia.

Was a different valve used on drum vs. disc braked cars as the Stoddard website lists the clips by size and by drum vs. disc.

I think the clip fits on the skinny part of the valve, probably only needs to match the brake/rim type, not the hole diameter.

I think I have a set of disc brake clips to compare with the ones on my drum braked car.
