Any information on 87854?

#1 Post by Brian Davies »

Hello,

I hope this kind of post is OK. I have 87854 which is a 1961 Roadster. I am looking for any information about previous owners because I'm curious to know more about the history of the car. Yes, I know about the Kardex, but I haven't gotten one yet, and as we know, they don't always contain a complete history of each owner.

My dad bought this car in the fall of 1970 from Ohlendorf International at 4811 Lee Highway in Arlington, VA. It looks like Ohlendorf was a small dealership that sold used import cars of various flavors back then.

It was originally Fjord Green with a tan interior I believe, but I'm not sure what color it was in 1970 when my dad got it. It looks like some previous owner before my dad painted the interior black... he denies doing the deed (who paints vinyl??). It still has the original seats in it - all ripped up of course - and you can see where it has ripped open that the areas in the seams and stuff is tan, not black. The door panels showed the same colors - tan under the escutcheon plates, and black everywhere else.

I'm currently working on getting the car fixed back up to be a nice driver-level car. It is bright red now (not the Porsche color, but it's close to Signal Red or Guards Red) with a grey squareweave carpet that I installed myself from a kit, and black door panels. I still have not gotten the seats sorted out, so it's rocking some really ripped up original seats. Patina!

Anyway, it would be really cool to find out a little bit more about the car if anyone remembers owning a car like this around that time that they sold or traded to that dealer.

Thanks all,

Brian

I doubt 87846 is a Feb '60 Roadster since my son's 87724 has a March 23, 1960 "birthday."

I must be getting senile, John, have NO IDEA how I came up with that date, although I do have two roadsters. My 1960 number 87846 was from 4/21/60 (thanks for the Kardex Jules) and was delivered to Brumos. Still say that Brian's car is a 1960 roadster

Did they sell a large number of roadsters in 1960? It seems like lately I am constantly hearing of them, and one just turned up in my friend’s shop for restoration too

My 1960 Roadster was built in Aug 1960 and is numbered 88324, if that helps pin it down.

I found a blurry Certificate of Authenticity that said that 87853 was 4/21/60 like your 87846.
