T5 wood steering wheels

#1 Post by Jules Dielen »

Any original T5 'flat spoke' wood wheels out there? So far I have found none in my little research..

Thank you Bill. Indeed, the standard dished 3 spoke VDM wheel, just in a wood version. I have never seen one. Not that thar means anything, but just curious if the T5 was skipped in terms of wood wheels.

Jules,

Porsche did not commission VDM to make the T5 wheel in wood, that came with the T6. Of course there have been T5 conversions and while they look great, they are not "correct"

Great to see you at Carlisle, by the way, the LEDs work even better than I imagined!

Thank you Sebastian, on both accounts 🤣 that solves it for me. Just odd that they skipped the T5.

Great to meet you at Carlisle as well, it was my first time. Fantastic event!!

here are some pictures of the factory wood wheel that resembles the original black one. They now make a very nice reproduction of the original black as well as the wood. We have sold a lot of them, but these pictures are of original ones

Thank you George! That bottom one looks like a T6 wheel. The top one is indeed a T5, do you have more info on it? Is it original to the car?

Hi Jules
What does it matter if the 'authenticity police' say a type of wheel is not correct. It's your car !
Kind Regards Jay

John, it has nothing to do with the Authenticity Police. I was having a chat with a fellow 356er and we had both never seen a factory T5 wood wheel. They were a factory option for A and BT6/C but seemingly not for BT5 cars which struck us as odd. Not even the few BT5 carreras had one.

Interesting subject. I don’t think the T5 356B was skipped over having Wood Steering Wheels available.

My viewpoint is Porsche used a standard VDM designed Steering Wheel on the T1/T2 356A and a new standard design on the T5 356B. Porsche offered for each of these series an optional Wood Steering Wheel, of different design, made by VDM and Nardi. There were aftermarket Wood Wheels available too such as Derrington for the A or VDM / Les Leston for the B. For the new 1962 T6 356B Porsche used the standard VDM design Steering Wheel (similar to the T5B) which was also available in the same design but in Wood as an option. Nardi also continued make optional Wood Wheels for the T6 356B/C.

Hey Michael,

Do you know of any BT5 cars that had a factory wood wheel like the T6? I have yet to see one. I have seen wood wheel options on COAs and Kardexes for A and BT6/Cs quite often, just not on a T5.

George, it is likely that the T5 wheel on your Roadster is not in fact an original wood wheel. As far as I know there has yet to be discovered an original factory T5 VDM wood wheel with the same hub and flat spokes as the standard black plastic factory VDM wheel.

Spencer, the only other factory owned car that has been upgraded and modified more than that one is Roadster #1. If that wheel is period made, it is a one off.
