How to box and ship seats

#1 Post by Adam Wright » Tue Jun 28, 2022 3:29 pm

This topic comes up fairly often and I was packing up some seats today to go to Australia and thought it would help everyone to document the process.

1. Go to Home Depot, Lowes, or U-Haul and buy a Wardrobe Box
2. Put the first seat in right side up
3. Put the second seat in upside down. This works well because the only parts of the seats that are touching are the soft, cushy parts.
4. Tape up the box

I've done this probably 100 times, never had a damaged seat.
I always need stories for my Barn Find column in the magazine, if you have a good story to share, please let me know.

And probably not much difference if you remove the recliners.

I too have shipped many sets of seats in wardrobe boxes from U-Haul over the years.

Here is an additional tip that can save you $100 or more per shipment:

Tip the seat backs forward when you "69" them. This fills the box more completely and lowers the height by 10-12 inches. You are paying a dimensional weight charge, not the actual weight so this can cut the shipping by half or more. I just did it last week and the domestic shipping dropped from $283 to $107 with UPS. I was able to use the "Shorty Wardrobe" box($9.99) instead of the regular Wardrobe box ($12.99). The "Tombstone" Recaros fit perfectly.

So what did the shipping cost to Australia? Huge price jump in the last year......
