356 hood/frunk

#1 Post by Walter Boyce »

Hi guys,

QQ how are you supposed to keep the hood/frunk of the 356b open? The broom handle isn't quite cutting it.

Is it a replica?

Original cars have catches built into the hinges.

Registry Vol. 18 Number 1, pages 11-12 details the DIY repair for welding the tips of the star wheels and escapement piece. Stoddards also sells repair kits. You may want to remove the star wheels altogether and keep the broom handle so at some point in the future the hood doesn't get kinked by someone not schooled on 356's tries to pull the hood closed.

I think some have adapted hydraulic shocks instead of the hinges.

I have very little patience with kinked hoods or with torn out hinge sockets. However, there are any number of telescoping handles on household appliances. When my wife surpluses one, I rescue it, go to Outdoor Supply and buy the right size cane tip(s) and I have the hood prop I need because I remove the star wheels and escapements from the hinges. On an A car the hood prop stores alongside the gas tank.

Harlan's right. I've used adjustable shower curtain rods as hood props. An adjustable tent pole would work, too.

I keep the star ratchet locks on my car as no one else opens the hood. However the telescoping tool below is one of my favorites and I use it often when working in the garage.

In 1994 my C came with no star wheels and a half inch diameter wooden dowel for a hood prop. Used that ever since. Sometimes I use my head (literally) as a prop when removing the spare tire but usually just put one end of the stick on the tire and the other end on the inside of the front lip of the trunk.

I guess if you were so inclined, you could eliminate the star wheels and install a modern day hood prop as found on Hondas, Toyotas, etc.
