As for the car, I learned a few things during the day (longest trip I have taken by far since I have it):
-The transition off idle is very bad. The carbs badly need a cleaning
-The speedometer is in Kms (face likely changed) but the odo is in miles, someone cheaped out on the conversion.
-I had several bulbs go out on the dash, then noticed they were still 6V, someone cheaped out on the conversion to 12V.
-I had a recurrent rumble in the left rear wheel. After taking it apart, I noticed the large washer under the axle nut was reversed, the beveled edge outside. The nut was tight against the axle, allowing that so small movement of the drum. And the left rear axle seal leaks. A lot.
-I had increasing crunching during gear changes. I went to tighten the clutch cable, only to notice that about 80% of the single strands making up the cable are snapped. I got lucky I made it home, I must be less than 10 clutch actuations from a compete break.

Back to the workshop.

Hi George, What a great post, you came up with a brilliant idea. Excellent roads, perfect weather, beautiful scenery. My great grandfather came from Safien, just over 100 kilometres away, but I see it would take over 2 hours to drive there. So I imagine it would make for a pretty exciting drive. Lucky you. Thanks for sharing your photos. jim
Safien, beautiful place. There is a small retaining lake there now, that likely wasn't there in your great grandfather's time.

Thanks for the links George. The pictures reminded me of my trip in my 2CV from Southern Italy to Bern then Paris. Too bad I lost my new Olympus Camera early in the trip. I do remember being in 1st gear at times being passed by everyone else.

I also did alp crossing with my citroen ami quite often, and well, I do remember smelling the brake pads, the clutch pads and got really scarred with the loss of brake power….the hand brake quite often saved me..

winter roads had to be taken in the reverse gear, as the front wheeler was to light to pull up the „horse“ in the correct direction..;)

really really great, thank you for posting the pictures. I too thought Goldfinger was the best of the Bond films. Remember my parents going and seeing it while I babysat for my younger brothers and sisters. I was almost 13

If I lived in CA recreating some of the scenes from “Bullitt” would be fun. Of course with a coupe some of the effect is lost. OTOH Mrs C still puts the same smile on my face as Jackie Bissett did on the King of Cool’s.

I was looking at these right after George’s post since I have the car and live in SF. Need to get my DVD player fixed so I can figure out the locations a bit better. J
