Brake Drum relining
Gentlemen.
Sorry to ask the obvious, but could you give me the contact for the folk in the USA who reline 356A & B brake drums.
Mine are outside limits, one is cracked.
Thanks in advance.
David

Re: Brake Drum relining
Mike,
Brake drum relining has a long and troubled history. In the 1980s the linings were spinning in the drums on the track. So far as I know, Martin Willis (The Machine Shop in Denver) is the only one whose linings, 40mm and 60mm have stood up to vintage racing. I would not run a relined drum, street or track, from someone whose work had not been successfully race tested.
I have not heard of C.H.Topping (Which may not mean much.) has his relining been race tested?

Re: Brake Drum relining
NO relined drums for me. There are plenty of used drums out there. Porsche did it right. Steering and stopping are the only must haves on any car. ...............Jim.

They are going to fall on the wall if you don't fix the photo Adam.

Re: Brake Drum relining
Martin Willis has been relining Porsche brake drums for many years.....and many of his drums are on race cars with great success! He`s had great success with his relined drums......good as new! He`s done dozens for me....with NO failures......bottom line......there is nothing wrong with relined drums from Martin! In fact the used drums out there today have been worn and need relining.....IMO

Re: Brake Drum relining
+1
I was running a worn out set of Carrera drums when I learned that Martin Willis re-lined drums were successful in vintage racing. Martin re-lined my Carrera drums and they work on track. I have since asked him to reline a couple of sets of street (40mm) drums and to arc new shoes to the re-lined drums. In my opinion, this set up of re-lined drums with arced shoes is as good as new. Better, in fact because I get the satisfaction of saving some rare parts. (I suspect that since Martin Willis's re-linings survive turn 2 at Laguna Seca they will survive anything you can throw at them Jim.)

Re: Brake Drum relining
Hi All
How are the Steel Brake drum linings located in the alloy Finned T5 B Drums ? When we first got our car, the front drums would vibrate loudly on hard braking. Then it mysteriously stopped ! What would have caused this? found nothing obvious when stripped down. Whether the Drum linings are out of true?
We did replace the Brake Shoes (which were not worn) and the new replacement shoes may have had a more True Arc or Radius, not sure. This was 22 years ago ! Haven't had the problem since.
Regards Jay

Re: Brake Drum relining
Perhaps they had not chamfered the shoe lining at the leading edge. That would initiate vibration.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Re: Brake Drum relining
+1 for Martin. He is a fantastic machinist and has talented staff. In addition to relining drums, he has an innovative way of swaging the front outer bearing "snout" to shrink and turn to the original i.d. to repair spun races. He does much more than drums. I had him do my 912 heads last summer. He gave me a cook's tour of his shop, amazing capabilities. Rod sizing & bush, end for end balancing, weight matching, case line boring, sparkplug thread repair, head crack weld repair, flywheel surfacing, and much more.
If you drop off or mail him work, be sure to ask him for his Stirling Moss's Speedster t-shirt when the parts are ready
