fuel pump rebuilding
While researching the topic , I came across a comment by member Bill Weber who located a source for the fuel pump shaft seal which is not included
in the typical rebuild kits available . Are those seals still available ? if so , a source ? On a separate note , other comments related to the lack of quality
diaphragms in the rebuild kits have come up in the past ; has that issue been resolved , or is it to be assumed that a pump rebuild is a short term
solution that requires periodic repetition ?

Re: fuel pump rebuilding
James, as to the diaphragms, I have used Stoddard kits, and have had no problems. I can't help with the shaft seal. ...........Jim.

Shaft seal is included in the late kit. Seal separately is this https://www.stoddard.com/nla10890417-nl ... 04-17.html BTW, Stoddard NLA sells just under of those kits per month -- with no returns for any quality issues.

Brad - Wondering: just under one hundred, thousand, million kits per month? I agree, no issues with the current diaphragms, A/B or C/912.

Bruce, not that I’d trust them but are the original diaphragms usually still functional? I have not personally seen one that failed in the handful I’ve disassembled

Martin, if you mean original and unused then they are probably still usable. Just like a lot of other original materials though I don't think they play well with ethanol over time.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Re: fuel pump rebuilding
Martin - Almost universally, in old pumps, the diaphragm had gone bad. When they are exposed to fuel (with or without ethanol), the low molecular weight compounds in the neoprene are leached out over time. Then, when the pump sits around dry for a long time, the diaphragm becomes very stiff. Failure isn't with any tears, etc., but with the loss of flexibility. So I'm on the opposite side from you - I've only seen a few good ones in the many (hundreds) of old ones that I've disassembled. Granted, if it's in the car and working, it may be fine. I'm talking about old pumps that have been sitting idle for long periods.

Re: fuel pump rebuilding
FWIW, the diaphragm in my late fuel pump was still good after sitting unused in my old engine for 10 years. I replaced it with another Stoddard one for good measure when I built my new engine. The accelerator pumps are another story. They were garbage after sitting.
