Luggage Rack Bolts

#1 Post by Jim Clement »

Does any one know what the size and thread type is for the luggage rack bolts that secure the luggage rack to the engine lid ?
Mine are well painted over, and I need to run a tap through them, and I do not have the bolts.
and does anyone know what the length of them are ?

The bolts are 8mmx1.25 but I'm unsure of the length. $26 American dollars seems kind of steep for 4 bolts - even Home Depot and Lowes carry metric hardware these days. If I had to guess, I'd say they're 60mm - there is a standoff tube as well and if you have those, it should be a pretty simple calculation to get the right length.

Thanks Greg - Yes I have the stand off hardware.. just measured, it is 55 mm plus the depth into the grill, so likely as you suggest at 60mm or if I could find 62.. 65 may stick past the bottom.

My notes indicate 8x70 mm, 1.25 pitch. 14mm ATF.

okay - Thanks.
I will run the tap through the hole first, then see if I can find 60 mm and 70mm length.
Will report back in a few days.

Bolts shown above are stainless with polished heads -- similar to originals.

BTW, those bolts are DIN 931, 8 x 70, not something usually found at Ace Hardware.

Are there washers with the bolts or no?

When I had the rack on my car, I used nylon washers between the bolt head and rack to prevent scratching the chrome.

For future reference if you need metric bolts and nuts, washers, etc. You should consider using Belmetric (www.belmetric.com) - they have a huge selection, cheap to purchase, good quality and ships fast...
