That’s an excellent idea, it’s surprising that nobody mentioned it yet.

Yes, Good call Doug
I'd forgotten that. A worn Starter Pinion Bushing can often Mimic a starter motor failure ! Whenever there is Clutch work or Engine out . That bush gets replaced

The starter in there was bought from Heritage Parts as a reconed unit. I'm not sure sure what was reconditioned so that is why the old starter is being done properly and will be going back in

Hi Neil , I'm sure you have sorted this by now , just to let you know that I had similar problems with my Outlaw '55 356 running with a 912 motor , and my Tribute 914/6 running with a 2.7 911 motor . I eventually had the 356 starter/solenoid rebuilt , but continue to tap the solenoid on the 914/6 with a hammer , very relaxing

Most old 4-cylinder Austin-Healey drivers had callouses on their right hand from reaching behind them and banging on the bulkhead where the recalcitrant electric fuel pump was mounted. That was also quite satisfying.....
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

A friend drove his MGB GT across several states while keeping the attention of the fuel pump that way.

John: I do not think Porsche did not design the Porsche or VW to be started using your method!. Take the starter to a excellent electrical restoration business. Banging around on the starter will do nothing more than allow damage to the ring gear teeth on the flywheel. You should have at least a 500 FT. LB. torque wrench to remove and install the flywheel, a new seal, and a new heavy duty Flywheel Bolt.

I read through this thread to hopefully solve my own hot start issue on my '64 C Coupe. Happy to report that a full unbolting, removal and cleaning of all battery and grounding connections seems to have solved my hot start problem. No more embarrassing self push-starts like I had to do last week in the Whole Foods parking lot (fortunate to have a small pavement decline). Certainly this is first step for anyone. It also allowed me to clean up the pan underneath where there were early signs of corrosion starting to develop from battery acid. Thanks to the contributors.

In college my $300 B didn’t start hot for a year. I always took a passenger along to help push.
