356A front fenders and nose on a 356B

#1 Post by Chad m Yeadon »

Looking for pictures or info on putting the 356A front end /fenders,hood, nose on a 356B. Can it be done and look good, does anyone have any pictures of doing it, and finished car?

Chad
A T-5B coupe has the same rear fenders and small glass like an T2A. The A front fenders and trunk clip will fit fine. Bumpers are different, chassis the same. There may be a few around but you can't tell. I have seen T5 front ends on T2 cars, they fit fine, the factory would have used what was on the line to repair a wreck at the factory. They replaced the body and put a 13XXX replacement body number on them. There is a 60 Drautz body roadster up here with a T-6 body on it done at the factory.

Reputedly the A hood is crowned differently from the T 5 hood but with the same outline so it fits.

You will need an accomplished 356 metal man to butt weld this on properly. There are a few here in So. Cal. that I could recommend. They are all super busy. .....Jim.

Verify that hood fit works as I have not done the swap.

Yeah, welding isn't an issue for me, I just didn't know what all it would involve. Had not seen any restoration pictures and such on here of someone doing it. I'm not looking for a concourse restoration, just want to do it correctly if I had to do it. Inner fenders, hood, fenders etc.

There are several front end replacements and repairs below. The internal structures are almost the same, you are just swapping the skin. You should call "Trevors panel works" or restoration design to see what a A nose clip, bumper and hood would cost. Look at this link and you can see what it takes. It's no harder than fixing one that has hit something in the front. New metal is pretty easy.

T2A and T5B hoods will work on each other, not correct and perfect, but will work with some slight modifications. Fenders and nose swapped out is fairly easy if you're good with body work and welding, lots of common points of reference. Bumper mounts will be different but can be changed while nose if off.

On fenders do I remove all the way to the doors? I'm assuming the B doors line up with T2 fenders? And do I need to replace the header panel under the windshield?

Chad

You will align the fenders to the doors, depending the condition of the original metal will determine how far back it needs to be cut. Look through the links at ABCGT. There are probably 50 photos of this on several of the cars, that show the entire front fenders off, and what it takes to get them back on correctly. They will also show what needs to be done to the chassis before the fenders go back on. Where are you and where are you going to get the replacement panels.

I'm in Illinois, I have not decided on buying any panels yet, just getting ideas right now. I'm still a year out before I start this project. Thanks for the link, very helpful

It's helpful if you have a nose that's together as a unit, rather than lots of different pieces.
