Rusted thru Gas Tank, save or scrap?

#1 Post by Carl E. Klem »

My half filled 356A tank sat in the car for 46 years. I can now poke my gloved finger thru the top. I have decided to get a new replacement. Any reason to save the old one? My car is going to be a driver. Any thoughts on this appreciated!

Can you still use the fuel filter assembly and the level sender, and of course the tank filler cap. Thro the rest away, Just ny opinion, its not like you can transplant the date stamp.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

No.

The only item that may be worth saving is the front lip with the date code stamped, if it is even present.

The sender and the petcock assembly are stuck on. When I decide to scrap, I will use a more aggressive approach to removing them

I once sold a whole truckload of horrible tanks for an outfit that was repro'ing the GT tank, they said they would buy any tank as long as the top and bottom hole were intact. They got some real holey tanks, but didn't complain.

My lower section of my tank looked like it had been in a firing range there were so many holes in it and at the time I couldn't find any companies who were selling replacement tanks so I just had to bend up some steel and tig it to the excellent top section. I was a little worried about leaks but I can weld OK some it came out alright.

Got the sender and the petcock off. Both are trash! Cap can be salvaged. Tank is going away Saturday to the hazmat station. Any one near Santa Cruz (Monterey area) that would like it, let me know. It STINKS, I want it gone!

Update: Got a new Dansko Tank, got a Petcock worthy of a rebuild. Did a number on the sender, now clean and good, but the Copper Float Axle is stuck. I have bathed, burnished, and beat it. But it is still stuck :( If I grind off the copper "rivet" end then the axle is toast! Any good answers out there....

This won’t change much but I think the float axle is steel.

If there's a date stamped on the lower-left lip, just add a stamping to the replacement tank.

Everything in my fuel system new (except main line). I just did the required triple flush on the new Dansko tank. Read here on the forum to use duct tape to block off the holes. Did a test with the tape & carb cleaner on a metal piece with a hole in it. All good. tested with gas too. All good. Used a small piece of fuel line with a plugs for the vent & stuffed in the petcock hole. All good. Duct taped the fuel port & sender holes. All good. put carb cleaner in thru petcock hole and started the rinse. What a mess! the tape is great, but the carb cleaner ate the paint under the tape and got everywhere :( So much for a new looking tank. Had to act quick, so dumped the juice and used my gloved hand over the sender hole and put the fuel cap on and did round 2. Paint floaties all over :( Lots of rag usage and 4 gas flushes later it is almost good on the inside. Paint overspray inside from the factory still present and crispy :( Now sitting on the deck enjoying a gin and tonic :)

Dick, that's known as "fraud".
