Re: New member introduction - 1960 Roadster
Congratulations on your Roadster, it may have been in the factory with mine, #87430.
Would be interested to know if yours has the original interior. If so, is there a pocket with lockable flap on the right side door card? It seems some Roadster had flaps on both sides, some only had it on the driver's side.
My car had a new interior when I bought it so I don't know what was O.E. on mine but had a friend that had a S90 Roadster bought new that had the pocket on both doors and there was no mention of it on the Monroney label as an option.
Based on your VIN, it probably has the single mount transmission.
Good luck and welcome.

Do you mean like this? Yes the interior is original as far as I know.

Great video, Vincent!
I think your plan to make the car roadworthy and driving it as is is an excellent one. That was my plan with my Cabriolet when I got it, but it was further gone than this beauty. After some initial attempts at getting on the road, it went to the body shop and the subsequent restoration took 7 years.
Drive it and enjoy it!

Thanks Greg, glad you enjoyed it!
The car does have some rust under the paint I've noticed, especially in the usual spots like the fronts of the doors. But it's not too bad at the moment. It appears the floor pans have been done some time ago too.

Bill,
I thought the lockable door flap “covers” were optional. I have a 60 normal and I believe i have the original door panels that have the flaps and they are not mentioned on the COA

Ha Ha! My brakes are semi seized up too as is the carburetor linkage. 48000 or so miles on the clock of this 60 Roadster too. I like you am not going to restore this car. I just want to get it up and running safely and dependably. I've been documenting Garage find much like you have as well. I'll post a video sometime as well. I will follow your progress closely.

Re: New member introduction - 1960 Roadster
Vince, My first 356 was a '60 B Super 90 Cab. Just after getting married during flight training, I lost reverse gear and traded it in on the '63 in the attached pictures. We put a lot of miles on that car, and I just sold it to a Registry member who is restoring it. Still have a '57 A Coupe that I've been "renovating" for sale. That was a prerequisite from my "Finance Chairwoman" before I bought my latest, another '60 B Super 90 Cab! So, lots of miles in 356s starting in 1963, including a couple of cross country trips from East Coast to Midwest then to West Coast for duty and back. The pics of the '63 were from a trip, camping, from San Diego to Patuxent River, MD, with a one-year old and a Miniature Schnauzer!! Thanks to my metalsmiths in the squadron, I had an "enclosed extender" for the aft luggage rack, and a large watertight bag for the VW rack on the top!!
Anyway, the point of this came when I watched your video, and you commented that you almost tossed out the booklet that listed all the VW dealers in the US. I suspect I wasn't the only one here who relied on VW dealers. As I remember being told, there were only a few Porsche dealers in the US. Maybe, Miami, New York, and LA? But there were VW dealers, and that's where I'd turn first. The first '60 crapped out in Texas on the way back to Beeville from getting married, and it got fixed up at a VW dealer. Before that the Super 90 engine blew up, almost literally, on a run from Meridian to Pensacola at night. Bright light from flames in the rearview mirror, accompanied by loud noises! Towed to the VW dealer in Pensacola. After losing reverse gear in Beeville, I limped it to the VW dealer in San Antonio (1966) to trade it in on a used VW (married then, and sensible?). Fortunately, my new wife spotted the only 356 in their lot, the '63B Coupe, and I took out a second loan to buy it!!
So, yes, a directory of VW dealers across the US was probably a wise choice for you friend to have in his Porsche in 1964. I suspect a directory of Porsche dealers in the US, if there was such a thing, would have been very small and probably useless for his transcontinental trip!
Best of luck and lots of enjoyment with your "new" Roadster!!

My early 1960 Roadster has the locking flaps on both doors. It is not listed as an option on the Kardex.
