Re: New member introduction - 1960 Roadster
Alright, well it's official. I signed the paperwork and bought the car yesterday. I also picked it up and dropped it off at the shop to get the process underway!
I'm already loving the historical adventure of going through the car and figuring out it's history. I've told some other people but I feel like Indiana Jones paging through these old documents like they're ancient artifacts. I found a map in the door pocket of the car with a hand drawn cross-country route from when the car was purchased (in 1964) in Atlanta and driven back to Berkeley California! Soooo cool. (Looks like two routes were planned, maybe in case of bad weather?)
We planned for just about every contingency during the pickup but one surprise still made us struggle -- the rear brakes were seized. So pushing the car was nearly impossible. We ended up towing it with an ATV but even that needed almost full throttle to get the wheels turning. We thought after the first few feet they'd brake loose but no luck. The winch for the trailer worked fine but we had to yank it off the trailer with another truck.
Will add the VIN to the registry now. This is chassis 87474.

I would frame the map and hang it right above the car as a reminder of past memories and the ones to come!

Re: New member introduction - 1960 Roadster
Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement. Looks like from the receipts the engine was rebuilt in 1998 by Leo Droughton with 912 cams and the 1600 cc pistons. (Still have the original pistons in boxes too.) Although that was 24 years ago, the car has only been driven 300 miles since then so I'm hopeful that the engine is fine.

Re: New member introduction - 1960 Roadster
I am living the same story in some ways. I have just purchased a 1960 Super roadster. A friends uncle passed and the car sort of feel into my hands. PO purchased the car in 1976 and parked it in his garage in 1987. He drained the tank changed the oil and just walked away. It has been painted once from 6004 off white to a yellow. Threw a battery in it and the lights wipers etc. all came up. After inspecting the fluids etc. I could not resist turning it over. If there had been fuel in the car it would have ran for sure. Not near as clean as yours though. It needs what yours does plus more since it's been off of the road for 33 years or so but it's all there just waiting to be put back on the road. I look forward to following your progress. Perhaps we can meet up sometime and go for a little drive.
Cheers

If any of you are bored while waiting for the Superbowl today, I made a short video of my experience unearthing this car from it's long term storage. I'm sure some of you will fact check me as I'm very new to 356s! https://youtu.be/jLHWAsU_jKc
