Post Classified Scam Stories Here

#1 Post by Cliff Murray »

There has been an increase of scammer activity on every website on the internet. Our club is not alone. Even the largest and most diligently policed classified marketplace sites have been unsuccessful at protecting their honest law abiding users from occasionally falling victim to these crooks.

I strongly believe that education of our members will go a very long way towards reducing the occurrence of these crimes. To do this I would like our members to post their stories or to post stories that are written in other club publications describing classified scams. The crooks have so many ways to cheat people that every story may be different so read them all. Also, by posting your experience it will keep us all diligent and always thinking about all the ways that these creeps will try to fool you.

Do not post stories using actual member names unless that person is you and you want your name known.

I hope this helps.

I have a story to post from the Norton(motorcycle) Owner's Club, a UK based international club about the size of the Registry. I will post that tomorrow.

This article was written 11 years ago and shows you how little things have changed. More frequent today but the same old methods.

I really like the idea of posting the names of the scammers but they should also be posted in LARGE RED LETTERS on the classified and wanted ads because the majority of our members don't participate on the Talk Forums.

I would say it is ALWAYS best to walk away if you have the slightest suspicion. But that's just me, I suppose...

Anytime you feel queasy about a deal, make the person selling the item do something to prove they really have it. This can be as simple as a sticky note with your name and date on it, placed on the item in question. Or ask for a photo that they couldn't pull off the internet, like the backside of a wheel.
People have asked me to take some crazy photos over the years to prove the car is real and with me. Remember, if someone is unwilling to do one small thing in order to get a lot of your money, you have to ask yourself, is that someone you want to do business with?

My favorite pic of late, a guy wanted to know that I really had a 911, so I took a pic with me, the car, his name, my company name, and the date, oh, and my elderly hua-hua. Hard to fake all that! Where are you going to find a hua-hua on short notice?

As promised here is an article that was published by the Norton Owners Club from the UK. This is a worldwide problem and we can all learn if these stories are shared.

My favorite off all time was a guy who answered a wanted to buy ad I posted looking for wheels, he said he had shelves of them. Great! The only problem was the pictures of the shelves were my shelves. I told him I didn't need to send him money for my wheels!!!!!
Or there are the guys who just had jaw surgery so they can't talk on the phone, but do have the time to respond to wanted to buy ads, because I know what I would want to be doing after jaw surgery, answer ads about Porsche parts!
Or the all favorite that I don't need to show you the car, I'll pay to ship it to you, and if you don't like it, ship it back, like it's a pair of shoes, not a car.

How many times has a request for pictures been, I dropped my phone in water so I cannot take pictures today.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.
