Al, You said We offer 5 different kinds of 6 volt regulators. Please tell us more about those.

I believe there are plenty of original big Black 6V regulators for sale, eg at the LA lit show I always saw them. Stay away from smaller 356C regulators which do not properly limit current. Advertise for one in the classified. As Harlan said, they are good robust units, if kept closed to prevent corrosion. But if you buy one you really do need to have it calibrated. (Both voltage and current). Joe Leoni describes how to calibrate. Did someone say ABC part works does calibration?

Doug (from abc partswerks) was able to find a 'correct' date for my large-base regulator

The late great Joe Leoni (RIP) did not like the electronic regulators. He would not criticize them in the many technical lectures he gave, but if you asked him in private he would tell you they were sh*t, and Joe did not usually use such language......
For him the best was a correctly adjusted Bosch large black regulator.

A) regarding installing a solid state regulator in the big Bosch black box I am sure someone will finally realize that this is or soon will be done. There are a lot of thinkers out in the real world. B) BRAD: 4 of the regulators are derivative of the 356C/ SC regulators. The only difference between C/912 regulators and the black box Bosch regulators is that the smaller regulators do not have a voltage control circuit. My guess is that TEN'S of millions of theses regulators were used by VW from 1940 till the alternator was adopted in 1973 (or so). They have a good history. We have been converting 356 cars to 12 volts for quite a while. First with generators and now with alternators. The advantage of the alternator is that at an idle more electricity is produced then with generator at 2500 RPM. Availability of 12 volt generator armatures is difficult. We have cars running with 12 volt solid state regulators as soon as production is available these will probably be our recommended choice. COMMENT: Since the start of the 20th century everyone has obtained a cell phone. WE made China rich. Our employees can access everything from their cell phone. I do not think anyone has a land line to their home. Credit where it was due, what Joe L. thought 20 years ago was correct. When you are out see if anyone is reading? We have been sucked into the boob tube. al zim

I've got a landline in our cabin too. Without it and the DSL line associated with it, I wouldn't be able to read some of these "enlightening" postings.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Has anyone tried one of these, from the description given it should be a direct replacement except cosmetically and it would require a mount to be fabricated.

That looks hopefully like it could be hid in the black box?

Wouldn’t that be 270 W, too high for any 356?

I would have thought for sure that it was too much for any 6 volt VW.

Do regulator change amp to maintain a stable watts but limited at 45amp? Or do they maintain a stable amp at 45 and keep the volts below a level say 6.5?

Voltage is regulated to a max of about 7.3 and current is consumed at the rated loads. A dead short would melt something but otherwise the current output would be as required to drive the load.

What about this one?

https://www.bbt4vw.com/en/catalogue/5-e ... tor-6v-t1/

There is an rpm v amps graph? How does it know the rpm of the generator? What is the 61 connector?
