356A Horn 'tube' assembly
So putting the steering and horn assembly jigsaw together on my '57 A
At the end of the steering tube is a copper washer/cover.. see picture... My questions - it appears there was a wire attached at some point - should there be small wire soldered to the tube, perhaps a ground ?
Should this whole copper washer/cover be fixed .. glued I guess ?

Re: 356A Horn 'tube' assembly
My1957 T1 did NOT have that copper looking piece on it.. I will try and find some pictures.
I think the two wires in the pictures go down to the brush contacts for the flasher and the horn, but would not be connected to the copper ring.
Although it might also explain why my ability to flash the headlights have never worked as well..

Hi Jim - yes those two wires go down to the where the two brushes come in for horn and head light ...and can confirm their continuity
It.
I removed the right side to better show the issue...its painted where the screw driver is pointing but I "think" that where this ring wire might attach..

I have never seen the copper ring on anything from 1952 to 1965. Jim.

Re: 356A Horn 'tube' assembly
Jim - with your extensive background knowledge, I think you may have answered the question
When I brought the car it was 100% disassembled in a 'pile' of boxes etc - the steering tube and rod being amongst them. There were two mounting holes for the Horn Contact (64434773100) and for the light signal but one was not even close to where the it should have been (relative to the copper bands on the rod)- so I cut it out and moved it. Perhaps this tube was a VW or something similar and this end ring is related to another car horn design. So just because it came in pile of Porsche parts one shouldn't think that is was a Porsche part. (Obvious in hindsight)
I will not use it in case it causes issues !
Many thanks to all
Case closed....or maybe not ! (Thanks Norm !)

Re: 356A Horn 'tube' assembly
Wondering if anyone can offer assistance. I have a 356A Convertible D. Have had continual horn problems w/horn turning, and staying on, all by itself. Originally suspected the horn relay. Not the problem. Then suspected the horn button. Not the problem. I checked continuity between wire going directly to the horns and brown wire going to horn contact switch on steering column. Would get continuity to come and go by turning the steering wheel. Decided to remove the steering tube, which is now out of the car. My car doesn't have the light flasher ring on the steering wheel but does have both a brown (Horn) and Black (light flasher) wire coming through the steering tube. I have soldered an 18 gage brown wire and an 18 gage black wire respectively to use as messengers when pulling out the original wires. Observation: original wires in steering tube look to be 16 gage but with some really heavy insulation. Any idea what kind of insulation or wire I should use when replacing? Lastly, I am unable to pull the original wires out of the steering tube. Any idea what's in the tube preventing them from being easily removed?
Thank you for your help.

Re: 356A Horn 'tube' assembly
If one is installed, the ring is always the horn. The button turns into a headlight flasher once a ring is installed.
If the steering column has 2 contacts, the car had a ring.
I would check the plastic spacers on the horn cup first.

Re: 356A Horn 'tube' assembly
Most D’s did not have the horn ring, it was sold as a bare-bones car for the weekend racer. If you wanted a horn ring, buy a cabriolet! However, the steering column on mine at least had two contacts. Probably easier for Porsche to install one part in all cars.Jules Dielen wrote: ↑Sun Jul 17, 2022 2:16 pm If the steering column has 2 contacts, the car had a ring.
