Heiner, I recommend a drive up from the east side of Mt. St. Helens. The drive is called Windy Ridge Overlook NFD-25. It is a twisty drive from ground level all the way up past tree line and to a lot that overlooks the side of Mt St. Helens that blew out. Below is Spirit Lake and a wonderful view overall. Hello Heiner and Bettina, It sounds like I am not along your route. I live an hour south of San Francisco. If you are in this area please look me up.

On your way to Crater Lake it is easy to bypass the Peter Skene Ogden viewpoint. I have unknowingly bypassed it a few times but now my map is marked to view this impressive looking gorge. Also near there is Smith Rock State Park which to me looks like a worthwhile short stop.

I look forward to following your trip! It is amazing how reliable the 356 is. My wife and I plan to drive to Chicago and then to LA on Route 66, a 5,000 mile drive.

thank you for your interest.
You are asking about challenging points on our road trip.
My first plan for the 2018 road trip was to ship my 1964 coupe to California and start there on a 3-month road trip. The German insurance company "Allianz" was not able to offer coverage for the trip for the historical vehicle. I tried to find a US insurance company but this was way too expensive. A friend from the 356CAR in Sacramento offered at that time his 356 to me and we decided to buy the 356 with US license plates. The plan was o sell the car after the trip. As it is with plans they will change. We got in love with the car during the first road trip (see attached pic) and decided to drive in 2020 to the East Coast and ship it by RoRo-vessel to Germany and drive it from Bremerhaven to our home. Covid came and distroied this plan. Luckily there is a great 356 community in Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe and we could store the car safely and do there all the necessary maintenance.
On our trip, we had no critical issues. Once we had to replace the axal seal on the left side and of course do the necessary maintenance.
Thank internet, and Google Maps with the street view we could find every day an excellent and safe place to stay overnight.
Currently, I am writing an article for the German 356 magazine. If there is any interest, I would like to be happy to translate the article for the Registry magazine.

If you book your hotels online, be sure to call and talk to someone about parking before you book it. Sometimes “parking” means on the street. Also, make sure you have enough annual miles on your insurance policy to cover the trip. It’s a good idea to talk to your insurance people and ask if what you’re doing is covered. My company told me for my cross country trip I would have to be driving to or from a “Motorsports Event” or I would not be covered. Luckily we were doing Fred Uhlmann’s Ultimate Driving Tour In Vermont so it was all good.
Get some new wiper blades and fuss with(bend) them until they mostly stay on the windshield. Also RainX and a waterproof car cover. You never know when it’ll rain. I’ll post a picture of my tools/spares set up when I get home from work. J
