Knecht air filter for Weber carbs?

#1 Post by Pascal Zundel »

Hi,
My car is equipped with Weber carbs and air filters' chrome tops that I do not like.
I would rather have the same Knecht silver cleaners as on Solex-equipped cars (S90s or SCs).
Do you know if these fit on Webers? Are there adapters, bottom plates for Webers?
Are there other air filters on the market that ressemble the Knechts and fit Webers?
Thanks in advance for your expert advices,
Pascal

I believe you can get adapter plates from one of our 356 vendors.

After you get the "Mainely" adapters for the Webers, you will still need the 5 through-bolts/washers to complete the installation. I got mine from NLA Ltd. for about $16:

Are you saying use the Flat 4 set up and the Solex bolts?

If you use those bolts won't you also need these:

Then you won't be needing the Flat 4 set up. A lot more expensive of course, but it does look more original. The Flat 4 is a less expensive way to get a better look than the K & N filter with element in view and chrome (I have those on my Weber 40 IDFs) for many hundreds of $$$ less.

Steve, it looks like Mainely makes a plate that allows you to bolt an original solex air cleaner right to the IDFs.

Thanks to all of you.
My first choice would be the adapter plates with original knecht filters.
My second choice would be the flat4 copies as they look good and they are really cheap.
I find the 5-bolt copies really expansive for what seems to be a very little benefit.

If you were addressing me, I was saying that if you use the Mainely Weber adapter with the original Knecht filters (which are what I have), you will still need the 5 original bolts that pass through the filter. I have not seen the Flat 4 setup (other than in the pics).

On the FLAT4, the bottom plate bolts in under the velocity stacks, then K&N filter/sleeve, then the top bolts to the bottom with a single bolt. They fit IDFs off the shelf, Dell's will require a spacer to clear the fuel inlet banjo. They won't fool anyone as to authenticity, but they do look appropriate.

Here is a photo of my engine with the standard chrome topped K & N filters for Weber 40IDFs for comparison.

Prevision Matters has the adapter plates. I don't know if any vendors in Europe that carry them but perhaps Eleven Parts.

If you are going to di it, do it with the 5 bolt setup. The single bolt looks bad. Sorry guys, just my opinion. ..............Jim.
