Transmission shaft coupler bush & main shaft oil seal removal
Hi guys, I'm still working on the gear shift on another thread for my early B T5 and making good progress which i will update later but have started this new thread just for these coupler questions.
Q1) Now I have removed the transmission coupler, how do I remove the swivel pin to replace the bushes, Is it pressed in with a press. Nice easy one I think.
Q2) The transmission main shaft seal is leaking and I tried to pull the old one out with the tool Heidi used in her video but the tool failed (cheap Chinese rubbish but all I could get in the UK at short notice) Any suggestions on the best way to pull the seal out. Maybe lowering the transmission for more access, Dunno?
Q3) Oil seal I bought was too large for the shaft, I thought it was a standard size or is my T5 14.5mm dia shaft smaller than a standard main shaft.
FYI I have the early single mount transmission Early T5
Thanks, Tim

Q1, yes press the bushings out carefully, there are several posts on this if you search for it, and people have pictures of them doing it
Q2 I just replaced my seal two weeks ago, and had a hard time getting the seal out, and spent an hour on it. I bought the same tool but a quality Lisle Tool. Lisle tool #58430. No problem and had it out in 10 minutes. Below are the pictures.
Q3 Send an email to Vic Skirmants or Brad Ripley, and both will be able to answer your question.
Best of luck!

Hi James that's been really helpful, thank you.
I did see this tool for sale but in the US so it's nice to hear some good feed-back before an expensive commitment.
We only have this version in the UK for fast delivery and as soon as I saw (made in China) on the box I was expecting it to let me down. which it did. totally useless.
Kind regards, Tim

understand about the China metal in some tools. The Lisle company makes professional tools for auto mechanics, I would give it a try. I was skeptical myself at first, but it got mine out.Tim Splaine wrote: ↑Thu Sep 29, 2022 2:23 am Hi James that's been really helpful, thank you.

Re: Transmission shaft coupler bush & main shaft oil seal removal
Hi James. I took your advice and found some articles on removing the pin, also a great video from a forum talk link, i'll share it again

I didn't have a metal block to insert the shaft but did it with a block of wood with a 18mm hole using a punch and copper mallet.
I've found the seal tool on ebay and will get one.
Cheers, Tim

The pin on mine was quite snug. I clamped the shaft vertically in the vice which held it securely enough to hit a punch pretty hard. The wood block would have just cracked.

The holder tool is pretty simple to make and use. Just don’t put any pressure on the aluminum castings. New plastic inserts are available from all vendors. Center steel shaft is knurled in the center.

Yes John I did see these tools on your thread, very nice. My wooden block seemed to work quite well but the pin was still oily and must have been out not too long ago.
On another note James, Vic has come back to me to confirm all shafts were 14.5mm not the 22mm size Roger Bray sent me.

Re: Transmission shaft coupler bush & main shaft oil seal removal
Hard to blame Roger Bray as he sent to the correct coupler for the Version #1 Single mount transmission coupler I think. There were 2 versions of the in tunnel shift rod (peace Pipe) with different I.D. See Jim Breazeale's comments here. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=50256&hilit=shift+shaft As JIm said "useless trivia" unless of course you have a single mount transmission. And Jon Bunin even posted a picture of the different variants of couplers!

The shaft and seal diameter didn’t change, what was larger was the part of the coupling that went into the end of the peace pipe.

Re: Transmission shaft coupler bush & main shaft oil seal removal
Roger Bray has said he sent the main shaft seal which is what I had asked for. Not sure what this shaft is as the name "main shaft" also seems to be used for the peace pipe coupler haft I wanted even by others in this thread.
Anyway Paul at PRS has sent me the one I need and the coupler pin with new bushes also from Paul are back together and reading to refit.
Thanks for the support, Tim
