In my experience, nothing crude about an Alfa design at all, in fact superior to 356 for the aforementioned reasons. But the German practicality (pushrods, torsion bars) build quality, especially the body prevail.
To those who snipe about Italian reliability, I point out that the only breakdowns I've had with my 67 duetto were due to the Bosch components! An anomaly I'm sure, but entirely true so far. Just drove the Giulietta spider veloce 750 miles in intense sections of the Pacific coast highway, no issues.
Nice to see Alfa getting mostly love here.
But...I do have more German cars than Italian.
