356SC Quantities & History

#1 Post by Kim Reeves »

Since owning this car since 2011 i have been looking for how many "SC" were made and many do we think have survived?

Lastly, i tracked down the last owner (who owned it since the later 80s) who sadly had passed away but, had a great conversation with his wife. Stories of their journeys in the car and how it was part of the family. Then when he retired the car was left in the barn, which is when they sold it to a car dealer in LA, which is who i bought it from in 2011. I would really love to find out how the car came into the USA and who else owned it. I used this registry and found a number from someone from the 80s and the number was now no longer in service..are there any other ways to get the bill of sale or something?
Thank you!

Start with getting a Kardex for the car Kim. Then you have a start point. search Kardex in the Ian discussion and ou will be able find someone to help you. Do not bother to get a COA from Porsche it is worthless.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Based on the number of SC engines built. There were a total of 5,752 SC (approx.. some engines were used in existing cars as warranty replacements). That is the total number, USA and RoW. Of that number, about 3,900 came to the USA.

+1 on what David said, get a kardex. Many of them have some good info.

@Jules, thank you and thanks to the others for writing us about Kardex. I wonder how many survived and our still driving today? I read somewhere about 1/3 of the 356's are still on the road?

Porsche says about 50% of cars built are still around. I am sure that number is heavily leaning on the later cars.

1964 was, however, the only year they cranked out more than 10,000 356s so in all likelyhood most are left from that year. By then, the preA cars were old and worn out already so they often were alread rotting away in a junk yard.

You still see some places like that, though ours rotate in and out pretty regular.

Well 356s in the Midwest rust easily and always have. Many were junked here as well as elsewhere. Remember Bruce Baker's story of dropping a rusted out Speedster shell to be buried where a new highway overpass was being built?

This website seems to have a lot of 356 Quantity info per year:

25 years ago when Bob Campbell had his 356/VW junk yard in Edmonds, WA he had a bunch of 356's stacked everywhere. Many were being dismantled (my current car has a few of those parts on it) and most look beyond repair. He moved his yard to where I don't know but it's totally disappeared now. Wish I'd thought to take photos or count the models at the time.

Adam
Were you talking about Campbell Volkswagen, in Edmonds. They had a small yard behind the dealership, mostly disassembled components on racks. When they rebuilt the dealership building the yard went away. I never put Bobs name to the dealership. It was very well organized lad lots of T-1 T-2 stuff.
